Candidates Rally for Voters

Get out and vote. That's the message from the four candidates vying for two Warner Robins council seats.

Advance voting for the run-off election is going on all this week, and candidates say the outcome of the race depends on how many people vote.

Nearly a month after the general election, the signs for two Warner Robins council seats still color Watson Boulevard.

Running for the Post 2 city wide seat, Tom Simms Junior stands along the road each day trying to raise support. He said, "The real work is done right where I'm at. Here on the streets, going by and talking to people."

The 51-year-old aircraft mechanic faces 66-year-old retired major general Hank Winner for the post. Winner now works as a senior manager at Lockheed Martin. Winner said, "Two city councilmen is one-third of our city government. It has a tremendous impact on everybody, every day of their lives."

Winner like the other three candidates, hopes at least the 9 percent of registered voters who came to the ballot box Nov. 6, cast their vote December 4th.

Doug McDowell, the Post 6 incumbent and 41-year-old webmaster for the Houston County School System, said he's spent the past few weeks sending the message he focused on before the run-off. McDowell said, "I've worked for them the past two years. I'm going to continue to keep working hard for them for the next four years, if they put me back in there."

McDowell's opponent, 68-year-old retired construction superintendent John Williams, called the long campaign season challenging but worthwhile. He said, " I met new people and met and made friends I'm sure are going to be with me the rest of my life."

Warner Robins election superintendent Vida Rawls said 49 people have voted since the polls opened Monday. Advanced voting runs from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Warner Robins City Hall through Friday. Then, balloting in the two races concludes Tuesday.

You did not have to vote in the general election to cast a ballot in the runoff.
